The Group

The acoustics group is led by Professor Yuan Zhang and is based at the School of Architecture and Planning of Shenyang Jianzhu University, the Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of Building Ecological Physics Technology and Evaluation, and the Liaoning Provincial Academic Exchange and Innovation Research Center for Postgraduates on Smart Habitat and Healthy Cities. The group conducts research on urban soundscapes and architectural sound environments, environmental restorativeness and human well-being, and healthy building design and technology.
With the goal of improving the quality of the urban environment and people’s quality of life, we explore the acoustic environment in urban open spaces, construction sites, open office spaces, school spaces, home spaces and other areas through field surveys, experimental research and other methods, while also focusing on acoustic theory and people’s subjective experience and health effects. Through the research results, we provide a scientific basis for urban planning, architectural design and public space management, and contribute to the health, comfort and well-being of city residents.
This group consists of two academics and nearly 20 students. It has advanced experimental equipment and professional research techniques, and is dedicated to promoting cutting-edge research in the field of urban sound environment. It continues to publish high-level papers in academic journals at home and abroad. Interested undergraduate and graduate students and collaborators are welcome to contact us.

Research Directions

Acoustic environment quality of urban public spaces: We pay attention to the sound environment quality of urban public spaces, using a variety of methods such as subjective evaluation, objective measurement, and experimental research to study the impact of different sound sources on people’s subjective experience and health, and propose corresponding improvement strategies to provide a scientific basis and policy recommendations for urban planning and public space management.
Traffic noise and its impact: We pay attention to traffic noise and its impact on people’s health and lives, systematically study the characteristics and impact mechanisms of traffic noise, and use objective measurements, experimental research, theoretical simulations and other methods to help urban traffic planning and noise control.
Restorative benefits of soundscapes and their mechanisms:
We focus on the restorative benefits of soundscapes and their mechanisms, and study the mechanisms by which soundscape attributes affect people’s subjective experiences and mental health.
Indoor acoustic environment and supportive design: We pay attention to the indoor sound environment of different types of spaces, such as school spaces, office spaces, halls, etc., and study how the sound environment of different specific spaces can provide users with a better listening experience. Using methods such as acoustic measurement, acoustic simulation, and experimental research, we provide scientific evidence and practical guidelines for the refined design of building interiors.
